Replacing Chemical Products with Aloe Gel
We use dozens of chemicals on our skin every day. Most over-the-counter skincare products are full of toxic ingredients that can cause harm. Even some “natural” products that claim to be safer still contain ingredients that just don’t belong on our skin.
According to the Environmental Working Group, the cosmetics and personal care industry are subject to very little oversight, and many manufacturers use chemicals that have been linked to cancer or reproductive issues. Among these toxic ingredients are formaldehyde, phthalates, and parabens.
Women use an average of 12 personal care products a day exposing them to 168 different chemicals.
Many of these chemicals can be replaced by one natural ingredient: aloe vera. A cactus-like plant that grows in hot climates, aloe has long been used for its medicinal properties. It is well known for its ability to soothe burns and sunburns, but aloe has many other uses as well.
Benefits of Aloe Vera
A review of 23 medical studies found that aloe vera is extremely beneficial for treating skin issues and supporting our body’s ability to resolve wounds.
Aloe vera can be used to soothe minor burns, including sunburns by simply applying after excess sun exposure. It is also safe enough to use inside the mouth to soothe the tissue and help improve dental and oral health.
Aloe can also help the skin retain moisture and may help prevent signs of aging. While some research shows that taking aloe vera supplements can help boost collagen production and increase skin elasticity, anecdotal evidence suggests that using topical aloe vera may have a similar effect. This may be due to aloe’s moisturizing properties, which help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
